Updating Printer Drivers Brother

MFC, DCP and HL Series, Chosen by Workflow

Pick the right Brother package for monochrome lasers, colour LED MFPs and inkjet MFCs without reinstalling unnecessary utilities.

4 min read Reviewed 19 October 2026 Independent guide

Brother’s naming is refreshingly systematic: HL for printers, DCP for copy and print, MFC for multifunction devices, with suffixes that indicate wireless, duplex or colour. The driver strategy is less uniform. A compact monochrome laser may need only a print driver, while an MFC with scan-to-network, fax and status monitoring may require the Full Driver & Software Package. Updating printer drivers Brother devices is a decision about which capabilities you need, not simply about clicking the largest download.

The full package is convenient but heavy. It can install scan utilities, status monitors, firmware update tools and services that run in the background. On a clean desktop that is fine. On a locked-down laptop or a print server, a printer-only package or a PCL/BR-Script driver may be preferable. The right answer depends on whether you need scan, fax and device management or just reliable pages.

01 Manufacturer context

Why updating printer drivers Brother is different

Brother publishes model-specific full packages, compact printer-only downloads, PCL and BR-Script drivers, and administrative tools. Monochrome HL devices usually work well with the compact package or a PCL driver. Colour LED and MFC models may need BR-Script for accurate colour and Mac compatibility. Network scanning is a separate service: the device must be registered with the scan utility, and the computer needs a firewall path for discovery.

Brother’s support site is model-led and generally precise, but some models have regional variants and carrier-specific firmware. Use the exact model and the region where the device was sold. For a fleet, standardise on a validated driver and document which devices need the full scan suite. Avoid installing the full package on every print server just to satisfy one MFP’s scanning workflow.

02 Windows 11 & 10

Updating printer drivers Brother on Windows

Start with the Full Driver & Software Package for an MFC that needs scan and fax. For an HL printer used only for output, the printer-only package is leaner. If Windows Update created a generic queue, remove it before installing the Brother package to prevent duplicate queues.

  1. 01

Record the baseline and clear the old queue

Note the exact model code, port, current driver version and any custom defaults. Remove the affected queue and, where relevant, its dedicated port. Restart before installing. This prevents Windows from silently reusing the stale driver.

  2. 02

Download the matching package from Brother

Select the exact model, Windows version and architecture. Verify the digital signature and release notes. If you need scan, fax, finishing or accounting features, confirm that the package includes those components rather than assuming they are bundled.

  3. 03

Install deliberately, not by automatic discovery

Run the signed installer and add the printer on the intended port. For a network device, use a fixed address or DHCP reservation. If a generic queue already exists, remove it before adding the new one so the driver choice is unambiguous.

  4. 04

Reapply options and test real output

Reselect installed trays, finishers, colour profiles and authentication settings. Print from two applications, test duplex and colour, then reboot and print again. If scanning is part of the workflow, test it separately.

03 macOS 14 and later

Updating printer drivers Brother on macOS

Brother’s current macOS package includes print and scan components for supported models. AirPrint handles basic printing but not the scan button or status monitor. On Apple silicon, verify the package is current; older installers may not be supported.

  1. 01

Remove the existing queue before downloading

Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners and remove the device. This clears stale driver references and prevents macOS from quietly reusing a generic PostScript queue. Note any presets or custom paper sizes first.

  2. 02

Choose AirPrint or the vendor package on purpose

If basic printing is enough, readding the device as an AirPrint queue is the most maintainable path. If you need scanning, specialty media, colour profiles or finishing, install the current Brother package and select the vendor driver explicitly.

  3. 03

Verify scan support outside the print dialog

Open Image Capture or the manufacturer’s scan utility and confirm the scanner is visible. A print queue can be healthy while scanning is absent. If the scanner is missing, fix discovery or the scan component before changing the print driver again.

  4. 04

Test, then record the working configuration

Print a real document, a colour page and a duplex job where supported. Note the queue protocol, driver version and macOS release. macOS updates occasionally replace a vendor queue with a generic one, so the record is your baseline.

04 Linux & CUPS

Updating printer drivers Brother on Linux

Brother provides DEB and RPM driver packages for many HL, DCP and MFC models, often split into LPR and CUPS wrapper packages. Install both in the documented order. Network scanning usually requires the separate brscan package and a scan-key tool configuration.

Start with discovery, not a download

Check whether the device advertises IPP Everywhere or AirPrint before installing a vendor package. A driverless queue is often more maintainable, even if it exposes fewer specialty settings.

Validate the queue and the job

After adding or updating the queue, print a real document and check duplex, media size and colour. For label or POS devices, confirm the command language and calibration separately.

Linux support is model-dependent. Where the manufacturer does not publish a current package, a driverless queue or a validated generic PCL/PostScript driver may be the only supported option. Treat unsupported features as unavailable rather than “almost working.”

05 Field notes

Brother driver traps to avoid

The three patterns below account for a disproportionate share of Brother driver support cases. They are worth checking before you download another package.

01

“Full package” is not always the right package

The full suite adds scan, fax, status and update utilities that a print-only device does not need. On servers and managed laptops, choose the compact driver to reduce background services and update surface. Install the full package only where its features are used.

02

Network scanning needs more than a print driver

A Brother MFP can print perfectly while scan-to-PC fails because the scanner registration, brscan package or firewall rule is missing. Register the computer in the device’s scan profile and test from the vendor utility, not only from the printer panel.

03

BR-Script versus PCL changes colour and Mac output

For colour LED models and mixed Mac environments, BR-Script (Brother’s PostScript implementation) is often the better match. PCL may be faster on Windows fleets but can expose fewer colour controls. Pick one, test, and document the choice.

06 Coverage

Brother models and series covered

This guide applies to the Brother families below. Model suffixes and regional variants matter, so use the label on the device or the configuration page before choosing a package.

The list is illustrative, not exhaustive. A driver page may cover additional models or exclude older regional variants. Always compare the exact model and release notes before installing.

07 Questions

Updating printer drivers Brother: FAQs

01 Should I install the Brother Full Driver & Software Package?

Install it when you need scanning, fax, status monitoring or device utilities on an MFC. For an HL printer used only for printing, or for a server that only needs a queue, the compact printer driver is usually cleaner and easier to maintain.

02 Why can my Brother printer scan to the computer but not from the computer?

This usually means the device’s push-scan profile exists but the computer-side scanner driver or discovery path is missing. Install the Brother scan package for the model, register the computer, allow the necessary network discovery traffic and test from the vendor scan utility.

03 Which driver should I use for a Brother colour laser on macOS?

Use the current Brother macOS package and select the model driver rather than a generic PostScript queue. For colour-critical work, BR-Script is generally the appropriate language. Confirm Apple silicon compatibility and remove any duplicated AirPrint queue before testing.
