Updating Printer Drivers Epson

EcoTank, WorkForce and the Driverless Handoff

Choose between driverless IPP, the Epson universal package and model-specific utilities for inkjets and WorkForce devices.

4 min read Reviewed 18 October 2026 Independent guide

Epson’s consumer lineup splits into EcoTank refillable inkjets, WorkForce office machines and specialised SureColor printers. They share a brand and a support portal, not a single driver. Updating printer drivers Epson devices starts by deciding whether you need the model-specific package, Epson’s universal print driver or a driverless IPP queue. Each choice changes which settings and utilities appear.

The most common Epson frustration is not a failed print. It is a printer that prints perfectly while Epson Scan 2 cannot find the scanner. That usually means the print path and the scan path were installed separately, or the device was added with a driverless protocol that exposes printing but not the vendor’s scan interface. Treat print and scan as two services that must both be verified.

01 Manufacturer context

Why updating printer drivers Epson is different

Modern Epson network printers advertise AirPrint and IPP Everywhere, so macOS and many Linux distributions can print without a vendor download. Windows may install a class driver through Windows Update. That driverless path is stable and convenient, but it can hide media profiles, borderless settings, ink level detail and scanner utilities. For EcoTank photo work or WorkForce finishing, use the model-specific package and then test both print and scan.

Epson’s universal driver is useful when many similar WorkForce devices need basic office output. It is not a substitute for the model package when you rely on specialty media, colour profiles or device-specific maintenance. SureColor and production models often require additional colour calibration or controller software. Read the model page carefully: a “printer driver” download may not include the scanner or maintenance utility you actually need.

02 Windows 11 & 10

Updating printer drivers Epson on Windows

Use the Epson support page for the exact model and choose the full package if you need Epson Scan 2 or colour tools. If Windows Update installs a generic queue first, remove it before running the Epson installer to avoid two queues with different capabilities.

  1. 01

Record the baseline and clear the old queue

Note the exact model code, port, current driver version and any custom defaults. Remove the affected queue and, where relevant, its dedicated port. Restart before installing. This prevents Windows from silently reusing the stale driver.

  2. 02

Download the matching package from Epson

Select the exact model, Windows version and architecture. Verify the digital signature and release notes. If you need scan, fax, finishing or accounting features, confirm that the package includes those components rather than assuming they are bundled.

  3. 03

Install deliberately, not by automatic discovery

Run the signed installer and add the printer on the intended port. For a network device, use a fixed address or DHCP reservation. If a generic queue already exists, remove it before adding the new one so the driver choice is unambiguous.

  4. 04

Reapply options and test real output

Reselect installed trays, finishers, colour profiles and authentication settings. Print from two applications, test duplex and colour, then reboot and print again. If scanning is part of the workflow, test it separately.

03 macOS 14 and later

Updating printer drivers Epson on macOS

AirPrint may be enough for basic output. For scanning and media profiles, install the current Epson package, allow it in Privacy & Security, then add the queue with the Epson driver rather than Generic PostScript. Verify Image Capture sees the scanner.

  1. 01

Remove the existing queue before downloading

Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners and remove the device. This clears stale driver references and prevents macOS from quietly reusing a generic PostScript queue. Note any presets or custom paper sizes first.

  2. 02

Choose AirPrint or the vendor package on purpose

If basic printing is enough, readding the device as an AirPrint queue is the most maintainable path. If you need scanning, specialty media, colour profiles or finishing, install the current Epson package and select the vendor driver explicitly.

  3. 03

Verify scan support outside the print dialog

Open Image Capture or the manufacturer’s scan utility and confirm the scanner is visible. A print queue can be healthy while scanning is absent. If the scanner is missing, fix discovery or the scan component before changing the print driver again.

  4. 04

Test, then record the working configuration

Print a real document, a colour page and a duplex job where supported. Note the queue protocol, driver version and macOS release. macOS updates occasionally replace a vendor queue with a generic one, so the record is your baseline.

04 Linux & CUPS

Updating printer drivers Epson on Linux

Try a driverless IPP queue first; most modern EcoTank and WorkForce devices support it. Epson also publishes Linux packages for selected models. Scanner support often depends on the separate epsonscan2 or SANE backend, so test scan and print independently.

Start with discovery, not a download

Check whether the device advertises IPP Everywhere or AirPrint before installing a vendor package. A driverless queue is often more maintainable, even if it exposes fewer specialty settings.

Validate the queue and the job

After adding or updating the queue, print a real document and check duplex, media size and colour. For label or POS devices, confirm the command language and calibration separately.

Linux support is model-dependent. Where the manufacturer does not publish a current package, a driverless queue or a validated generic PCL/PostScript driver may be the only supported option. Treat unsupported features as unavailable rather than “almost working.”

05 Field notes

Epson driver traps to avoid

The three patterns below account for a disproportionate share of Epson driver support cases. They are worth checking before you download another package.

01

Driverless printing does not include Epson Scan 2

AirPrint and IPP Everywhere are print protocols. They do not install Epson’s scanner application or expose every media setting. If scanning matters, install the scanner component separately and confirm the device’s scan function is enabled.

02

EcoTank suffixes are easy to mix up

ET-2850, ET-2850 XL and regional variants can share a support page while differing in bundled features or firmware. Use the exact model from the printer’s status sheet. The wrong package may print but omit maintenance or colour options.

03

Firmware and driver updates solve different problems

An Epson firmware update can change ink handling, network behaviour or third-party cartridge recognition. A driver update changes the computer-side experience. Do not treat them as interchangeable, and do not apply both at once when diagnosing a fault.

06 Coverage

Epson models and series covered

This guide applies to the Epson families below. Model suffixes and regional variants matter, so use the label on the device or the configuration page before choosing a package.

The list is illustrative, not exhaustive. A driver page may cover additional models or exclude older regional variants. Always compare the exact model and release notes before installing.

07 Questions

Updating printer drivers Epson: FAQs

01 Do I need an Epson driver if AirPrint already works?

Not for basic printing. You may still need Epson software for scanning, borderless media profiles, ink status detail, maintenance routines or specialty SureColor features. If the current queue does everything you need, do not replace it just because a vendor package exists.

02 Why does Epson Scan 2 not detect my printer?

Confirm the printer and computer are on the same network, scanning is enabled on the device, and the Epson scan package is installed for the exact model. Firewall or VPN rules can block discovery. On macOS, check Image Capture first; if the scanner is absent there, the issue is below the application layer.

03 Should I use the Epson Universal Print Driver?

Use it for standard office output across a fleet of similar WorkForce devices where you have validated the feature set. Avoid it for EcoTank photo printing, SureColor production work or any device that depends on model-specific colour and media controls.
